A little alchemy.
I trust the image that arrives before the explanation. Shadow work, lived experience and years spent traveling the world feed that instinct. If something makes me laugh, flinch or lean closer, I pay attention.
Directing is partly listening: where is the energy taking us, what is the actor or collaborator revealing, and how do I translate that into performance, image and rhythm? Craft gives the intuition form.
The work can go dark; the process doesn’t have to. I take it seriously, not solemnly. It should stay strange, seductive and alive—with meaning you can feel.

THE FILMMAKER
Ryan Chang.
Ryan Chang is an internationally award-winning filmmaker and writer-director. Since nineteen, his life has moved through six years in the military, months inside an active war zone, the Middle East, London, Portugal, Texas and Florida, artist residencies, DJ booths and film sets. He is exacting about the image, curious about people and generous with the ones helping make it.
Jungian psychology, tarot, shadow work and healing gave him ways to process what he had lived through; the films became the form that process took. Obsessive notes in Mysterium Coniunctionis, DJing in Ibiza and Spice Girls videos all belong to the same curiosity. At Nida Art Colony, he developed that thinking through color, editing rhythm and myth.
He likes collaborators with strong points of view, direct communication and enough humor to keep the room alive. The work matters; so does enjoying the people making it.

Command across the
whole film.
Ryan holds the whole system of a film in his head: what the work is trying to become, how each department serves it and how to reverse-engineer the path from idea to finished deliverable.
Juries have recognized his direction, cinematography, color and visual effects. Professional command of editing, sound, finishing and theatrical delivery catches problems early and protects the image. Collaborators get a clear common language without being left in the dark—and room for their own creativity to change the picture.
